John Hardy

After receiving his PhD, John completed postdoctoral research at the MRC Neuropathogenesis Unit in Newcastle upon Tyne, England and at the Swedish Brain Bank in Umeå, Sweden. He became assistant professor of biochemistry at St. Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College London where he initiated genetic studies of Alzheimer’s disease. In 1989, John became an associate professor and shortly thereafter, served as the Pfeiffer Endowed Chair of Alzheimer’s Research at the University of South Florida. He moved to Jacksonville, FL, to be a consultant and professor of neuroscience for the Mayo Clinic. In 2000, he became chair of neuroscience and, in 2001, served as the chief of the Laboratory of Neurogenetics at the National Institute on Aging, in Bethesda, MD. In 2007, he took up the chair of Molecular Biology of Neurological Disease at the Reta Lila Weston Institute of Neurological Studies, University College London. In 2015, he was awarded the Breakthrough Prize and, in 2018, received the Brain Prize from The Lundbeck Foundation in Denmark.
