Environmental & Genetic Determinants of Parkinson’s Disease Progression

2026-Present

Environmental and genetic factors confer not only Parkinson’s disease (PD) onset but may also underlie heterogeneity in PD progression. We will utilize a well-established PD cohort, patient-derived stem cells, and novel animal models to determine the mechanisms by which environmental toxins accelerate disease progression and identify genetic factors that confer individual vulnerability to rapid progression, using pathological alpha-synuclein transmission as a key biological index of progression. We will focus on two specific pesticides copper sulphate and 2,4-D that we have linked to faster symptom progression, and air pollution, which is increasingly recognized as a key risk factor for PD.
