Alexander Bernhardt is a neurology resident at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and researcher at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases. His work focuses on α-synuclein aggregation, seed amplification assays, and biomarker development in Parkinson’s disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. He studied medicine at Heidelberg University, the University of Oxford, University College London, and the McGovern Medical School. He developed a quantitative Lewy-fold-specific α-synuclein seed amplification assay and contributed to studies on α-synuclein co-pathology in Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome. His research combines clinical neurology with molecular biomarker approaches, proteomics, and neuropathology to better understand disease heterogeneity and early neurodegeneration. He also co-founded the patient advocacy organization YAMSA e.V. for multiple system atrophy.
